Today we decided to hang out in the Kapa’a area and check out some of the local stores, etc. and we also decided to take in a Luau which was a bit of a bust but at least we can say we did it. Didn’t take a lot of photos this day but here’s some highlights from what we did shoot.
You may recognize this bird, it’s a female Northern Cardinal, the same ones you can commonly see in the US. They are well established here but not as much so as the Red-crested Cardinals from South America which are pretty much everywhere.
This is another introduced species, a Japanese White-eye, they are pretty ubiquitous however they are not that easy to photograph, it took a lot of shots to finally get one that would hold still long enough! This guy is feeding on an exploded Papaya that was actually in the hotel grounds where we were staying.
View down the beach from our hotel, our room was about 75 feet from the water, it was quite nice however the beach was quite steep and it drops off very quickly, there are small coral reef remains right off the beach however and there was some good snorkeling for some pretty topical fish. I guess one of my next big expenses is going to be getting underwater gear for the cameras…
The ubiquitous Plumeria. I did not know that this was NOT a native Hawaiian plant until this trip! Plumeria is native to Mexico and Central/South America, it was introduced to Hawaii long ago but it’s not a native plant.
